P2A3F: Excessive Time to Enter Alternative Fuel Control
What to do
The car runs on petrol for longer than it should before switching to gas, so your running costs go up without anything appearing to be wrong. A thermostat stuck open is a common and cheap cause — it delays warm-up and therefore changeover. Worth mentioning if the heater also seems slow to get hot.
What this code means
The engine took longer than expected to switch over to gaseous fuel.
A bi-fuel car always starts on petrol, and the reason is the vaporizer: it turns liquid gas into vapour, vaporisation absorbs heat, so it is warmed by engine coolant — and until the coolant is warm there is no gas to burn. So a changeover delay is normal — the question this code answers is how delayed.
Which makes it the most useful early-warning code in the range, because the switchover time is a direct measurement of how well the whole gas system is working. A conversion that used to change over in ninety seconds and now takes five minutes has something wrong with it, and nothing else will have told the driver.
Three things stretch it. A cooling system that no longer warms up properly — a thermostat stuck open is the classic, and it delays changeover on every journey while causing no other complaint. A vaporizer scaling up internally, so it transfers heat less well than it did. Or a system that keeps trying and failing to change over, which is really P2A3E wearing a different hat.
In cold weather a longer delay is expected and is not a fault. The comparison that matters is against the same car in the same season, not against a number.
