Rear Camera Module

The reversing camera and its electronics. On vehicles sold where rear visibility equipment is mandated it is required equipment rather than a convenience, so a camera that does not work can matter at an inspection as well as in use.

The practical loss is real regardless. Rear visibility from a modern vehicle is poor by design — high waistlines, thick pillars, small screens — and the camera exists because of that. Reversing without it is not simply reverting to an older car; it is a poor view that the vehicle's shape assumes will be supplemented.

Two causes dominate and both are locational. The lens faces backwards and down at bumper or handle height, directly in the spray from the rear wheels — road film, mud, snow and ice cover it within a single journey in bad weather. The tailgate harness crosses the hinge, flexing every time the gate opens and sitting exactly where water runs if the rear screen seal or high-level brake light leaks.

A blank screen is not proof the camera has failed — the display, the display interface or the head unit can each produce a black reversing view with a perfectly good camera, and whether the rest of the screen works is the evidence that separates them.
