Also known as: 149b, 280a, 8140, sofim, ducato 1.9, iveco 2.5

The diesels of the early Fiat Ducato and its Peugeot and Citroën twins — the 1.9 149B, its turbocharged 280A and the Sofim 8140 family beside them.

⚑ Sofim was a joint venture between Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Saviem, which is why the same engine turns up under four badges and why the parts trail is confusing: searching 8140 finds material that searching Ducato does not.

They are indirect-injection engines with mechanical pumps — no rail, no filter, nothing to regenerate — and nothing to read with a scan tool. Diagnosis is physical: compression, glow plugs, injection pump timing and injector nozzles account for nearly the whole fault list.

These are working vans and most survivors have very high mileage, so wear rather than failure is the normal finding.

The DW8 and DW10 that followed in the PSA-badged vans are different engines with their own pages here.

1 generation, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
