General Motors' Atlas family — an unusual set of inline four, five and six cylinder engines sharing one architecture, fitted to the Colorado, Canyon, Trailblazer and Hummer H3. The 3.7-litre inline-five is the one most people encounter, and a five-cylinder in a mid-size truck was distinctive even at the time.

The layout is the diagnostic frame: a five-cylinder's firing order and vibration signature differ from a four or a six, which matters when reading a misfire or interpreting a roughness complaint by ear.

Its known failure is the cylinder head, where cracking between the valve seats on a defined range of production let coolant into a cylinder — presenting as coolant loss and misfire, and routinely misdiagnosed as a head gasket. Beyond that, the recurring items are the timing chain and its tensioner at high mileage, and — on the Colorado and Canyon — the usual consequences of working duty in dusty conditions.

3 generations, across 3 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
