The Hyundai Motor Group's smallest petrol engines — the three-cylinder and four-cylinder units of the i10, Getz, Picanto and Atos, in 0.8 to 1.2 litre forms. Epsilon is the older family, Kappa the current one; they are grouped here because they occupy the same place in the range and the same diagnostic territory.

These are simple, low-stress, port-injected engines, and that is genuinely the most useful fact about them: with no direct injection, no turbocharger and modest outputs, they lack most of the failure modes that dominate this catalogue. A fault is usually a sensor, a coil, a vacuum leak or a servicing consequence.

What does bite is the duty cycle they actually see. These cars are bought for short urban journeys, which is the hardest possible use for any engine: oil rarely reaches temperature, deposits accumulate, and a car with low mileage but many cold starts can be in worse condition internally than a higher-mileage motorway example. Read the journey pattern, not just the odometer.
