Mahindra 2.2 mHawk

Mahindra's first 2.2 diesel — 2,179 cc, four cylinders, chain-driven twin overhead camshafts, a variable-geometry turbocharger and Bosch common-rail injection with solenoid injectors. In the Scorpio, the XUV500 and the Xylo, built at Igatpuri from 2007 until 2022.
⚑ It is a PSA DW12 underneath, and that is the most useful thing to know about it. Mahindra re-engineered PSA's 2.2 with AVL of Austria and gave the result its own name; the displacement is unchanged at 2,179 cc. The same engine reached India twice — Tata built the DW12 as well, and sold it from 2007 as the 2.2 DiCOR in the Safari, Hexa, Aria and Xenon. So a Scorpio, a Safari, a Peugeot 407, a Ford Transit and a Freelander 2 are all standing on one architecture, and the European service literature is worth reading on an Indian car. See DW12.
⚑ The engine that replaced it is a different engine, not a later version of this one. From 2020 Mahindra built the 4D22, which it also calls the mHawk Gen2 — 2,184 cc, its own design rather than a licensed one, and carrying the BS6 exhaust aftertreatment this engine was never built with. The two were on sale together: a Scorpio-N or a Scorpio Classic has the newer one while a first-generation Scorpio has this one. Five cubic centimetres and one badge is all that separates them from outside the car, so the build year is the test. See 2.2 mHawk Gen2 (4D22).
⚑ mHawk names four completely different engines and Mahindra uses it for all of them. This one is the 2.2 four. Beside it are the 4D22 above, a 1.5 four-cylinder, the 4D15, in the XUV300, the Marazzo and the Thar, and a 1.5 three-cylinder sold as mCR100 in the Quanto and mHawk75 in the Bolero — different blocks, different cylinder counts and different injection calibrations. A code list or a fault tree taken from one does not apply to the others, and the badge on the tailgate will not tell you which you have. Count the injectors. It was sold at two ratings and they are far enough apart to feel like two engines. Mahindra published it at 120 PS with 28 kg-m and at 140 PS with 33 kg-m, the second with a faster-spooling turbocharger; the XUV500 later took it to 155 PS on an electrically actuated variable-geometry turbocharger. None of those carries a particulate filter.
Boost faults point at the vane mechanism, not a wastegate — there is no wastegate. A variable-geometry turbocharger controls boost by moving the nozzle vanes, so an over- or under-boost code is asking about the vane ring, its actuator and the linkage that drives it. Soot binding the mechanism is what the architecture is prone to; a wastegate diagnosis has nowhere to go here.
