Nissan's 1.4 four — in the Micra K12 and the Note.

It is a small, chain-driven, all-aluminium engine designed with Renault during that partnership, and it is the engine of a very large number of small cars still in daily use.

Its recurring complaints are cheap and physical. Ignition coils fail individually and give a misfire under load; the crankshaft position sensor produces an intermittent no-start that reads as an electrical fault; and the thermostat sticks open, which shows as poor economy and a heater that never gets hot rather than as an overheating complaint.

A rattle on a cold start at high mileage is the timing chain tensioner, and on an engine of this value that is often the point at which a car is retired rather than repaired.

The CR12DE and CR10DE are the same design in smaller sizes and their results apply directly.
