Tata's 1.2 and 1.4 fours — the engines that powered the Indica and the Indigo, and the reason so many of both are still running.
⚑ It is a 483 with a smaller bore. The designation is literal: 4 cylinders, 75 mm of bore, where the older commercial-vehicle engine has 83. This page said stroke until 2026-09-13 and the maker's own manual falsifies it: Tata's Indigo Owner's Manual gives the 475 SI as 75 × 67.5 mm in 1.2 form and 75 × 79.5 mm in 1.4 — one bore, two strokes, one family name, so the stroke cannot be what the digits record. The 483's 83 × 90 mm settles the other end by arithmetic, because only that pairing yields its stated 1,948 cc. That relationship is the most useful thing to know about it, because the 483 and 497 families that share its architecture have a page here, a far larger parts supply and decades more accumulated knowledge — and nothing on the car says the two are related.
Which injection system is fitted decides whether a scan tool is any use at all, and this is the point at which most time is lost. The early 475 is an indirect-injection diesel with an inline pump: there is no rail, no common-rail sensor set and almost nothing to interrogate, so diagnosis is compression, pump timing, glow plugs and injector nozzles. Later cars add a turbocharger, then an intercooler, and finally the common-rail CR4, which reads normally. All of them wear the same badge.
On the common-rail cars the recurring items are the family's: injector return flow is the fastest route through a rough-running complaint, and the fuel-filter water sensor corrodes in service and reports faults that are not there.
A petrol version shares the block, and it has a name of its own: 475 SI. The manual prints it in both capacities — Tata 475 SI (MPFI) - (1.2L) at 1,193 cc and (1.4L) at 1,405 cc, multi-point injected, 10:1, firing 1-3-4-2 — so a parts search that says only 475 will return diesel injection hardware for a petrol car. One designation covering engines of two fuels is the same trap the 497 sets, and here the suffix is the way out of it.
