Toyota's petrol straight-six for the Land Cruiser — the 4.2 2F and 4.0 3F — before the 1FZ-FE.
It is an overhead-valve engine of genuinely old design, descended from a 1950s Toyota six by way of a great many revisions, and its virtue is that it will run on almost anything and can be repaired anywhere.
The 2F is carburetted and the 3F-E is fuel-injected, and that is the dividing line for diagnosis: on the carburetted engine there is nothing to read and everything to measure. Most running complaints on a surviving 2F trace to perished vacuum hoses rather than to the carburettor itself.
It is thirsty and slow and neither is a fault. The 1FZ-FE that replaced it is a modern twin-cam six with its own page here, and nothing about the two transfers.
