Volvo's own inline-five diesel — the 2.4D and D5 — sharing the modular architecture of the petrol five beside it and, unlike the 2.5 TDI that preceded it in the 850, designed and built by Volvo.

The recurring items are the swirl-flap mechanism in the intake manifold, whose plastic linkage fails and can be drawn into a cylinder, and the EGR cooler. Turbocharger and injector wear follow at high mileage, with the usual caution that a turbocharger which failed through oil starvation will take a replacement with it unless the feed is addressed.

A five-cylinder misfire has its own firing-order arithmetic, which is worth saying because the diagnosis reads differently from the four-cylinder diesels most technicians see more of.

The 2.5 TDI in the 850 and P80 V70 is not this engine. That one is a VM Motori unit bought in, coded D5252T, and it shares nothing with the D5244T that replaced it.
