Chevrolet Vortec (badge, not an engine)

Vortec is a badge, not an engine. General Motors used it from 1996 for petrol engines with a particular inlet-port design, and then for almost every truck petrol it sold — from a 2.2 four to an 8.1 V8.

In this catalogue's own rows it appears on the 4.3 V6 and the 5.7 V8, under the codes L05 and L35; GM applied it far more widely than that. The codes are what to search, and they are on the block and in the build sheet.

⚑ One fault under this badge is famous enough to be worth naming here even though it belongs to one engine: the 4.3 V6's central injection assembly — a single spider-shaped unit feeding poppet nozzles down the intake, which leaks internally as it ages. The symptoms are long cranking, a rich condition and misfires that read like almost anything else, and it is worth eliminating early on any 4.3 of these years because nothing else produces quite that combination.

The 5.7's story is different and ordinary: distributor cap moisture on the earlier ones, and an intake manifold gasket that seeps.
