Mazda F4A-EL

Mazda's transverse four-speed automatic — in the MX-3, and, because Kia built Mazda-derived cars for a decade, in the Kia Rio and Sephia.

A Kia with a Mazda gearbox is not obvious from either car, and Kia's own literature for these years is thin — so the Mazda service information is very often the only useful source.

Its recurring failure is the solenoid pack and the valve body, presenting as a harsh or delayed engagement into drive and a 2–3 change that flares. It arrives gradually and is usually blamed on the clutch packs, which at that stage are typically still serviceable.

These are old enough that fluid history is unknowable and usually poor. A pan drop tells more in ten minutes than any amount of scanning, and the transmission predates sealed-for-life entirely — the interval was specified and simply skipped.

It is the 4F27E's smaller relative, not the same gearbox: Ford and Mazda's later joint four-speed is a different unit with different parts, and the naming gives no hint which is which.
