Mercedes-Benz GLS
The full-size seven-seat SUV, called GL-Class before 2016 and GLS after, and the same vehicle throughout — which matters when searching, because half its service history is filed under the old name. It shares its platform and much of its running gear with the M-Class and GLE, so that is the second place to look. The dominant fault is the Airmatic air suspension: bags perish, the compressor runs to compensate, and the resulting codes name the compressor or a level sensor while the leak is elsewhere. On the OM642 diesels the oil cooler seals leak onto the valley of the engine and the intake swirl flaps break up and can be drawn in — both classic, both expensive if left. The transfer case's actuator is the recurring driveline item.

X164 2006–2012
The first GL, on a stretched and widened M-Class W164 floorpan rather than a ladder frame. Naturally aspirated M273 petrol V8s, and the only GL to carry the 4.0 OM629 twin-turbo diesel V8 — an engine that shares almost nothing with the OM642 sold beside it, so a parts search on "GL diesel" reaches the wrong one. One gearbox throughout, the seven-speed.

X166 2012–2019
Every petrol engine is turbocharged now — the M276 V6 and M278 V8 replace the M273 outright — and the 2015 facelift renames the car GLS and brings the nine-speed. The 5.5 M157 in the 63 is hand-built and is the only AMG engine this model line carried before the X167. The OM642 diesel is the one thing that runs the whole span, X164 and X166 alike.
