Chrysler CRD (badge, not an engine)

CRD is a badge, not an engine — Chrysler's word for a diesel, on Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Lancia, and almost entirely on cars sold outside North America.

⚑ Almost none of the engines under it are Chrysler's. The Jeep Compass was sold with a 2.0 CRD that is Volkswagen's EA188 and a 2.2 CRD that is Mercedes-Benz's OM651 — two other companies' engines, one badge, one brochure. The parts, the service literature and the failure modes belong to Wolfsburg and Stuttgart, and a workshop looking for Chrysler documentation on either will find none worth having.

⚑ And the badge is wrong about the one thing it names. CRD stands for Common Rail Diesel — and the 2.0 is a PD, a Pumpe Düse engine, where each injector is its own pump driven off the camshaft and there is no rail on the engine at all. A diagnosis that starts at rail pressure on a 2.0 CRD is starting at a part that does not exist. See TDI for what a PD engine's camshaft and injector loom do instead.

What the badge covers here:

  • 2.0 — Volkswagen EA188, in the Compass, Patriot and Sebring.
  • 2.2 — Mercedes-Benz OM651, which replaced it in 2011.
  • 2.5 and 2.8 — VM Motori R425 and RA428, the Liberty, Wrangler, Nitro and Voyager.
  • 3.0 V6 — Mercedes-Benz OM642 on the earlier cars and VM Motori's A630 on the later ones, the engine North America met as the EcoDiesel.

⚑ The 3.0 V6 is two different engines under one badge and one displacement, a decade apart and from different manufacturers — the Chrysler 300 LX has the Mercedes and the 300 LD has the VM. Nothing but the year tells them apart from outside.

Establish whose engine it is before anything else, and then its own designation. Each of the families above has its own page here.

  • O carro — marca, modelo, ano e motor.
