The car drives normally, but the reversing camera will not display. Be more careful reversing than you would be in an older car — modern rear visibility is poor by design because the camera is expected to make up for it, so this is a bigger loss than it sounds. Take particular care anywhere children might be.
On some vehicles a working reversing camera is required equipment, so it may also matter at an inspection.
Two free things to check. Clean the lens — it points backwards and down, right in the spray from the rear wheels, and mud, road film, snow or ice cover it within a single journey in bad weather. And if the boot has been damp or a rear light has misted, say so: the camera wiring crosses the tailgate hinge exactly where those leaks run, and it flexes there every time the gate opens.
One question worth asking before agreeing to a new camera: does the rest of the screen still work? A blank reversing view can be caused by the display or the head unit rather than the camera, and those are different repairs.

A reversing camera is not a convenience feature in the way it once was, and that is the reason this code is not filed as low severity. On vehicles sold in markets where rear visibility equipment is mandated, a camera that does not work is missing required equipment — so beyond the practical loss, it can matter for roadworthiness and for a vehicle inspection.
The practical loss is real regardless. Rear visibility from a modern vehicle is poor by design — high waistlines, thick pillars, small rear screens — and the camera exists because of that. Reversing without it is not simply reverting to an older car; it is reverting to a poor view that the vehicle's shape assumes will be supplemented. Anyone reversing where children might be should be markedly more careful.
Before anything is diagnosed, two things account for a large share of these and cost nothing.
The lens. It faces backwards and downwards at bumper or tailgate-handle height, directly in the spray thrown up by the rear wheels. Road film, mud, snow and ice cover it routinely, and in winter it can be obscured within a single journey. A dirty lens does not usually set this code, but it is worth eliminating first because it produces the same complaint.
The tailgate harness. Everything reaching a tailgate-mounted camera crosses the hinge, flexing every time the gate opens, and sitting where water runs if the rear screen seal or high-level brake light leaks. That is the same combination described at U0230, and it is the leading physical cause here.
One thing worth knowing before a quote is accepted: a blank screen may not be the camera. The display, the display interface at U0255, or the head unit at U0245 can each produce a black reversing view with a perfectly good camera. Whether other things on the screen still work is the evidence that separates them.
