Suspension feels harsh or uncontrolled
The ride has changed — crashing over bumps it used to absorb, floating after them, or leaning further than it did through corners. On a car with electronically controlled damping this can happen with nothing mechanically worn at all: when the system stops trusting its inputs it usually defaults the dampers to one fixed setting, which is either firm everywhere or soft everywhere, and both feel wrong in a way that is easy to blame on tired shock absorbers. Worth establishing whether it changed gradually, which suggests wear, or overnight, which suggests the electronics.

What this usually means
Two opposite complaints hide behind one description, and separating them decides the repair. Harsh is too much stiffness — every joint in the road arrives in the cabin. Uncontrolled is too little damping — the car floats, wallows, or continues moving after a bump.
Uncontrolled points at the dampers. A damper that has lost its oil or its valving no longer resists the spring, so the body keeps oscillating — and the free test is still the best one: push down hard on one corner and release. A healthy corner returns and stops; one that rises past its resting height and bounces again has a failed damper.
Harsh points at things that have gone solid. A seized damper, a collapsed top mount, or perished bushes transmit what they should absorb. On adaptive suspension, harshness is often a control fault rather than a mechanical one — a damper stuck at its firmest setting because its actuator or supply has failed, which produces a ride that is worse than any worn component.
Check the obvious before the expensive. Tyre pressures well above the placard figure make a car harsh immediately, and so does a tyre with a stiffer sidewall than the original. Both are free to test.
On air suspension, harshness usually means the system is not maintaining pressure — a car sitting low has less air and therefore a stiffer spring rate as well as less travel, and that has its own entry.
A car sitting on its bump stops should not be driven: there is no suspension travel at all, the tyres can foul the bodywork, and impacts go straight into the structure.
