U0321: Software Incompatibility With Suspension Control Module A

What to do

Look at the car from a few metres away before you drive it.

If it is sitting low, or low at one corner, do not drive it — have it recovered. An air suspension that cannot pump itself up sinks over a few hours, and a car resting on its bump stops has no suspension left at all: the ride is violent, the tyres can catch the arches and the headlights point at the road.

If it is sitting normally, this is much less urgent. Expect the ride to be fixed at one setting regardless of which mode you select, and the car not to raise or lower. It is entirely safe to drive.

Nothing is broken. This code means two of the car's computers are running software that does not belong together — a programming job rather than a repair.

One thing to ask for when it is fixed, because it is easy to skip and hard to spot. Have the ride heights actually measured against the manufacturer's figures. The sensors report a raw position, and what that position means is a setting in the computer — so the car can end up sitting at a height that is perfectly steady and perfectly wrong, which affects the headlamp aim and the geometry and gives no warning at all.

A module is running software that does not belong with the suspension control module's. See U0300 for the family and U0301 for why the named module is not the accused.

A suspension module's software holds the vehicle's target ride heights, the damper maps for each mode, the load compensation, and — on an air system — the pressures and timings the compressor works to. All of it is specific to the body style, the spring rates and the market, which vary widely between vehicles sharing a module part number.

A mismatch normally sends the system to a safe fixed state, and what that state is decides how urgent this is.

Fixed damping and normal ride height is the common outcome: the vehicle rides firmly or softly regardless of mode, does not raise or lower, and is entirely safe. Have it looked at in the ordinary course of things.

The version to act on is a vehicle sitting low, or low at one corner. An air system that cannot run its compressor sinks — the bags leak the small amount they always leak and nothing replaces it — and a vehicle on its bump stops has no suspension travel at all. If it is visibly low, recover it rather than driving it, and see U0139 for why.

One thing specific to a software mismatch rather than a hardware fault, and it is expensive to get wrong. The ride height sensors report a raw position, and what that position means in millimetres of ride height is a calibration in the module. So a mismatched pair can hold the vehicle at a height that is stable, repeatable and wrong — high enough to change the headlamp aim and the geometry, or low enough to reduce travel — without any warning, because from inside the system everything agrees.

So after this is repaired, ask for the ride heights to be measured against the manufacturer's figures rather than assumed. A system that is confidently wrong looks exactly like one that is right.
