Ford's first four-speed overdrive automatic transaxle for transverse front-drive cars, introduced in 1986 in the Taurus and the Mercury Sable behind the 3.0 Vulcan V6. AXOD stands for Automatic transaXle OverDrive, and the name is the whole design brief.

It is hydraulically controlled, and that is what separates it from everything that came after it. The 1991 AXOD-E added electronic shift and converter control tied into the engine management; the AX4S and AX4N that followed are developments of that. So an AXOD and an AXOD-E are not the same gearbox with a different label — the valve body, the diagnosis and the parts all differ, and a workshop looking up an AXOD-E procedure for a 1988 car is looking at the wrong unit.

Its record is bad and there is no gentle way to put it. Failures at 60,000 to 100,000 miles were common enough across the AXOD, AXOD-E and AX4S line to attract sustained complaint — chronic stalling, slipping, harsh or erratic changes, hesitation, and sudden failure. Two named components recur:

  • The intermediate clutch, whose failure shows as a poor or slipping 1-2 change. This is the commonest single complaint.
  • The neutral-to-drive accumulator, whose failure is a hard bang into gear from N or P. That symptom is diagnostic — it is not a general slipping fault and should not be treated as one.

Fluid is the one thing an owner controls, and it changed twice inside this unit's short life. 1986 and 1987 cars take Type H; 1988 to 1990 take Dexron III or Mercon. Ford states outright that a fluid not meeting the Mercon specification can cause failure, which on a gearbox with this record is not boilerplate.
