Hyundai's IVT — Intelligent Variable Transmission — the C0GF1, in the Accent, i20, Venue and the Kias beside them.
⚑ It is a CVT, and the name exists to avoid saying so. Hyundai chose IVT because CVTs had a poor reputation in its markets — but everything true of a belt CVT is true of this, including that the fluid is specified, is not ATF, and decides the gearbox's life.
The one genuine difference is the belt itself: Hyundai uses a chain rather than a steel push-belt, which changes the noise it makes and gives it a slightly more direct feel. It does not change the failure modes.
Its simulated shift steps are deliberate. The control strategy imitates a stepped automatic under acceleration because drivers dislike the flare a CVT makes otherwise — so a report of it changes gear oddly is describing a designed behaviour, not a fault.
Shudder from rest is the standing complaint, and on these it is usually torque-converter lock-up or fluid rather than the variator.
