Land Rover's own manual gearboxes — the LT95, LT77, LT85 and R380 — in the Defender across forty years.
Four gearboxes in one model line means the year decides, and on a vehicle this often rebuilt the year on the plate may not be the year of the gearbox in it. Establishing which is fitted is the first step in any Defender gearbox question, and the case castings differ visibly.
The LT77's known weakness is fifth gear and its bearing, producing a whine that appears only in fifth, or fifth jumping out under load. A gearbox that pops out of one specific gear is a fork or a worn hub rather than general wear — repairable on its own, which matters here because these are kept a very long time.
The R380 replaced it and improved the synchros, but inherited the same fifth-gear position and much of the same reputation.
The LT230 transfer box is a separate unit bolted behind whichever gearbox is fitted, and a great many complaints blamed on the gearbox are the transfer box's chain or its bearings — a whine that changes with the transfer lever's position is not the gearbox at all.
The LT95 is a four-speed; the LT77, LT85 and R380 are fives. All four are Land Rover main gearboxes of the same era and are routinely confused in parts listings. Count the ratios before believing a listing, because the cases look alike.
