Porsche's rear-mounted manual transaxles — the G50 in the 930, 964 and 993, and the G96 in the 996.
The gearbox sits behind the rear axle with the engine behind it, which is the layout the whole car is built around and why a 911 transaxle is unlike anything else on this site. A generic rear-drive manual procedure does not describe one.
These are strong and their complaints are about feel. A change that has gone vague or long is the shift linkage and its bushings, which on a car with this much distance between lever and gearbox wear noticeably and are a fraction of the cost of anything inside.
The clutch and its hydraulics account for most genuine faults — a bite point that has climbed, or a gear that becomes hard to select when hot. A crunch into every gear is the clutch not releasing; a crunch into one gear on a fast change is that gear's synchro, and the distinction decides whether the gearbox comes out.
Second-gear synchro wear is the one that does arrive, and on a car driven hard from cold it arrives sooner.
⚑ It declares no ratio count, because the family holds both. The G50 in the 3.2 Carrera and the 964 is a five-speed; the G50/20 in the 993 and the G96 after it are six-speeds. A listing that says only G50 has not said which, and the two are not interchangeable.
