Also known as: a760e, a760h, a761e, toyota 6-speed rear-drive

Toyota's longitudinal six-speed — in the Lexus IS, GS, LS and SC.

It is the A960E's larger relative and the two are constantly confused, because both are Toyota six-speed longitudinals and both appear in the IS and GS in overlapping years. The engine decides which, and the parts do not interchange.

The A760H is the all-wheel-drive version and the A761E the heavier one behind the V8s; mechanically the same design with different capacities, and the letter is the only place the difference is recorded.

It is a durable transmission with few characteristic faults, which changes what a symptom means: an odd change is far more often fluid, a speed sensor or an engine mount than the gearbox.

Toyota's WS fluid is required and is not the earlier Type IV. Using the wrong one produces a harsh or delayed cold engagement in a transmission that is otherwise healthy — the same trap as on the U151E and the A960E, and it runs in both directions across Toyota's range.

4 generations. Only where a source names the model and the generation together — a gearbox is documented as a product far more often than as a fitment, so this list is deliberately shorter than the truth.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
