Hummer H1

The original — a civilian HMMWV, and almost nothing about it follows ordinary light-vehicle practice. The portal axles put the differentials above the hub centres and route drive through gear hubs at each wheel, so a driveline complaint has more places to originate than a normal truck; the brakes are inboard, mounted at the differentials rather than at the wheels, which is where an unfamiliar workshop loses time. Engines are GM diesels: the naturally aspirated 6.2 and 6.5, the turbocharged 6.5 with its injection pump-mounted optical sensor and the fuel-solenoid driver that is the classic heat-soak no-restart, and finally the Duramax 6.6 in the Alpha. Early trucks pre-date OBD-II entirely.
