Rivian

United States

American electric maker of trucks and vans. Its defining engineering choice is a zonal electrical architecture — a handful of large zone controllers replacing dozens of small modules — which means far fewer addressable units than a conventional vehicle and a fault tree that concentrates in software and network topology rather than in discrete parts. Quad-motor cars have an independent motor at each wheel, so a driveline symptom can be isolated to one corner.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
