The other half of an automated manual's position sensing — the sensor reporting movement along the gate, which actually engages and disengages a gear, as opposed to the gate select sensor that chooses which pair is available. The two are constantly mistaken for each other because their codes are numerically adjacent and their words are nearly the same.

This is the axis on which engagement is verified, so its failure is felt more directly. The module commands a gear, cannot confirm the shift rail reached its position, and either retries, refuses, or drops to neutral for safety. A vehicle that goes to neutral mid-journey and will not take a gear is the serious presentation, and it is one of the few faults on this system that leaves somebody stranded.

Diagnose it in the same order as its sibling. Circuit codes are the harness first, given where it lives; range and performance codes with a healthy circuit point at wear in the mechanism or at the hydraulic pressure moving it, since a sensor reporting that the rail stopped short is reporting the truth. Check actuator pressure before condemning the sensor — a rail that genuinely cannot complete its travel produces exactly this code with a perfect sensor fitted.
