Toyota's small diesel four — the 1.8 1C, 2.0 2C and 2.2 3C — in the Corolla, Carina, Avensis, Picnic and Estima.
It is indirect-injection with a mechanical pump and has nothing modern about it: no common rail, no particulate filter, nothing to regenerate. Almost every modern diesel complaint is inapplicable.
⚑ Its known failure is the cylinder head, which cracks between the valve seats and the pre-combustion chambers — a genuine pattern on the 2C and 3C rather than a rumour, and usually the consequence of one overheat. Coolant loss with no external leak is the tell, and a chemical block tester answers it in ten minutes.
The timing belt drives the injection pump as well as the camshaft, so a belt service is not the job it is on a petrol engine, and getting the pump timing back is the part that takes the skill. Glow plugs and their relay are the commonest cold-start fault and are testable in minutes.
