Aisin BG6

Aisin's six-speed manual transaxle for Chrysler's compact front-drive cars — the Caliber, Journey, Sebring, Jeep Compass and Patriot.

⚑ Chrysler's own literature calls this gearbox the Getrag DMT6, and the parts catalogue carries both names on one part number. Who actually built it is not settled here: the sales code BG6 follows Chrysler's Aisin naming and the press material credits Getrag, and this page keeps the name it has rather than picking a side. A listing quoting either code is quoting this transaxle.

It is the six-speed sibling of the Magna T355, fitted behind the larger engines and the diesels where the five-speed went behind the rest. The two are frequently confused in parts listings because the cars, the years and the model names are identical; the ratio count is the only thing that separates them.

Its recurring complaint is the clutch hydraulics rather than the gearbox. The concentric slave cylinder lives inside the bellhousing, so a failed seal — a pedal that sinks, a gear that will not engage when hot — becomes a gearbox-out job for a cheap part. It is worth replacing whenever the clutch is out, whatever its condition.

The gearbox itself is unremarkable and that is worth saying plainly. Second-gear synchro wear and linkage bushings account for most of what is genuinely wrong with them, and both behave as they do on any transverse manual.
