Debris or corrosion seizing the valve
A valve has stuck in position because of deposits, corrosion or foreign material in its mechanism rather than because anything electrical has failed.
Valves fail by sticking, and that is a genuinely different failure from breaking. A component that breaks stops responding and says so. A valve that sticks keeps reporting that it was commanded, keeps drawing its normal current, and simply is not where it should be — so a control circuit alone cannot see it. This is the whole reason valves that matter are given a position sensor as well as a driver.
What seizes them is usually time in one position. A valve cycled regularly wipes its own seat clean; one that has sat unmoved for months while conditions did not call for it accumulates deposits around the seal and then refuses to move when it finally is asked. Which is why these faults appear at the first change of season rather than during it — the first cold morning, or the first genuinely hot day.
The material matters and dates the fault. In coolant circuits it is corrosion products and the residue of old or mixed fluid; in exhaust and intake paths it is carbon; in either, a previous repair's sealant is a common and avoidable contributor.
Two practical points. A seized valve is sometimes freed rather than replaced, and where the design allows it that is worth trying first. But a valve fitted into the same dirty fluid or the same carboned passage has the same future, so the condition of what surrounds it is part of the repair rather than an optional extra.
