P26AB: Engine Coolant Bypass Valve A Stuck/Open

Watch the temperature gauge, and stop if it climbs. This fault can leave coolant circulating around the engine without going through the radiator, so nothing is removing the heat — and an overheated engine is a far larger bill than the valve that caused it.

A telltale worth knowing: the cabin heater blowing hotter than usual while the gauge rises. That combination feels reassuring and means the opposite, because the heater is on the circuit getting the hot coolant.

If the gauge is steady and the engine simply takes a long time to warm up, it is not urgent — book it in, and expect worse economy and a weak heater until it is done.

Ask what condition the coolant is in while the valve is being replaced. These valves seize on deposits, and a new one dropped into the debris that stopped the old one does not last.

Mention any recent cooling system work, since air trapped after a repair produces the same evidence as a stuck valve.

What this code means

The module has concluded that the A coolant bypass valve is mechanically stuck in its open position, with coolant taking the bypass route and not passing through the radiator.

This is the one member of the family that fails in the dangerous direction, and it is why this page reads differently from its neighbours. An open circuit or a lost signal leaves these valves at a default chosen to be safe — flow to the radiator, an engine that runs cool and warms slowly. A valve stuck in bypass does the opposite: the coolant circulates around the engine and nothing is taking the heat out of it.

The recognisable combination is a temperature gauge climbing while the cabin heater blows hotter than usual, and it misleads people, because a hot heater feels like proof the cooling system is working. It is the opposite: the heater matrix sits on the bypass circuit, so it is receiving the hot coolant the radiator is not getting.

Why these valves stick is worth knowing, because it decides whether the repair lasts. They are ball or rotary valves running in coolant inside a plastic housing. Scale, casting debris and coolant that has degraded or been mixed leave deposits on the ball and its seat, and a valve that has bound intermittently for months finally stops moving altogether. Fitting a new valve into a system still full of what seized the old one is a repair with a short life — the condition of the coolant is part of the job.

Before the valve is replaced, rule out the two things that imitate it, both for the reasons set out at P26A3: a temperature sensor that is misreporting, and air trapped in the circuit after recent work. The module reached this conclusion from temperature behaviour, so anything that distorts temperature behaviour can produce it.

Treat a rising gauge as a reason to stop rather than a reason to book in. An overheated engine is a head gasket or worse; this valve, on almost every engine that has one, is a housing assembly.
