P2422: Evaporative Emission System Vent Valve Stuck Closed
What to do
If the engine hesitates or stalls after twenty minutes or so of driving and is fine again after standing, this is a strong candidate and it is often mistaken for a failing fuel pump. Here is a check you can do yourself: open the fuel filler cap and listen. A loud rush of air into the tank means it was under vacuum, which is what a vent valve stuck closed produces — the tank cannot draw air in to replace the fuel used, so it fights the fuel pump. Mention that to whoever looks at it, because it points at an inexpensive valve rather than an expensive pump.
What this code means
The vent valve is not opening when it should. This is the more consequential half of the pair, because a fuel tank that cannot breathe is a fuel tank that fights the fuel pump.
Why breathing matters. As fuel is consumed, the volume it occupied has to be replaced by air, and that air comes in through the vent. Seal the vent and the tank develops a growing vacuum as it empties. That vacuum works directly against the pump trying to draw fuel out of it.
The symptoms follow in a sequence that is easy to misread:
- Fuel starvation that gets worse the longer you drive, because the vacuum deepens as the tank empties. A car that runs well for twenty minutes and then hesitates or stalls, and is fine again after standing, is describing this.
- Hesitation and stalling under sustained demand, which reads as a failing fuel pump — and fuel pumps get replaced for it.
- In severe cases a plastic tank can be visibly drawn in.
The free diagnostic is one anybody can perform and it is close to conclusive: open the fuel filler cap and listen. A loud rush of air inward means the tank was under vacuum, and on a warm day a small pressure release is normal but a sustained inward suck is not. That single observation separates this from a fuel pump before any money is spent.
The causes mirror the stuck-open case — corrosion, debris and a seized plunger — because it is the same valve in the same hostile place.
