Cause
Failed glow plug
A heater element in a diesel combustion chamber, used for cold starting. They usually fail one at a time and the engine still starts, so the complaint is rough running and white smoke for the first minute rather than a no-start — and they are commonly replaced as a set because removal is where they shear.
