Say exactly how long the roughness lasts and whether it clears completely. A shake for the first twenty or thirty seconds that then disappears is what this code describes, and it is the most useful detail you can give.

Mention when the spark plugs were last changed — or on a diesel, whether cold starting has been getting slower. Plugs and glow plugs that work perfectly once warm are the commonest cause here, because a cold, rich mixture is the hardest thing to light.

Treat it as an early warning rather than a nuisance. It catches components that are marginal but not yet failed, so acting now is usually a small repair.

Mention any blue or white smoke on startup, which points at something mechanical rather than ignition.

What this code means

The engine ran unacceptably rough during the cold-start period.

This is the family's misfire code, and it is deliberately separate from the ordinary misfire codes because the standard applied is different. During cold start the engine is running heavily retarded ignition, a raised idle and an enriched mixture — conditions it never sees again in the journey. A cylinder that copes perfectly once warm can be marginal here.

So this code catches problems that are invisible the rest of the time, which is genuinely useful and is why it is worth acting on rather than dismissing.

The causes are the ones that specifically bite when cold:

  • Worn spark plugs. A larger gap needs more voltage, and the cold, dense, rich mixture is the hardest thing to light. Plugs that work warm fail cold — the classic presentation.
  • Low compression on a cylinder. A cold engine seals worse than a warm one, so a marginal cylinder shows here first.
  • Injector deposits, giving poor atomisation when the fuel has least help from heat.
  • On a diesel, a weak glow plug, which is the direct equivalent.

The diagnostic value is the timing itself. A fault that appears only in the first thirty seconds and clears completely is telling you the component is marginal rather than failed — and that is a repair caught early rather than a breakdown.
