Failed turbocharger bypass valve

The valve that recirculates charge air when the throttle closes, no longer opening or sealing. It exists to solve one specific problem: the compressor is still spinning and pushing air when the driver lifts off, and that air has nowhere to go. It stalls against the closed throttle and surges back through the compressor wheel — compressor surge, audible as a flutter and destructive to the turbocharger's bearings.

Failing to open is the damaging direction. Every lift-off from boost then surges the compressor, and the flutter people sometimes enjoy is the sound of the turbocharger being worn out. A turbo is far more expensive than this valve, which is the argument for not living with it.

Failing to seal is the commoner one and less obvious. A torn diaphragm or a worn seat lets charge air leak back to the inlet continuously, so boost is low, the engine feels flat, and the module may report underboost — with no noise at all to suggest this valve. Diaphragm types perish with heat and age; the piston and solenoid types that replaced them stick with oil residue.

Check it before condemning a turbocharger for low boost, since the symptoms overlap exactly and the difference in cost is large.
