P2261: Turbocharger/Supercharger Bypass Valve A — Mechanical

What to do

Expect a flutter or chattering noise when you lift off the throttle, and boost that is slow to return between gearchanges. That noise is not a performance feature — it is air reversing through the compressor, and it is hard on the turbocharger's bearings, so it is worth fixing rather than enjoying. On a vacuum-operated valve the usual cause is a torn diaphragm, which is an inexpensive part.

What this code means

The turbocharger or supercharger bypass valve is not doing mechanically what it was commanded to do. The word "mechanical" is the whole point of this code: the module found no electrical fault, so the circuit is fine and the valve is not moving, or not sealing when it does.

What the valve is for. A compressor spinning at speed is pushing a large volume of air forward. Close the throttle suddenly and that air has nowhere to go — it stalls against the closed plate and reverses back through the compressor wheel, which is called surge. The bypass valve prevents it by opening a path that recirculates the air back to the compressor inlet the instant the throttle shuts.

The noise it prevents is one people deliberately seek out, which is worth being clear about. The chatter or flutter heard from some turbocharged cars on lifting off the throttle is surge — air backing up through the compressor. It sounds impressive and it is hard on the compressor wheel and the turbo's thrust bearing, which is the bearing least able to cope with load in that direction. A valve that has failed produces the noise for free, and it is a symptom rather than a feature.

The characteristic failure on a vacuum-operated valve is a torn diaphragm, which is a cheap part, and on an electrically actuated one a seized or worn valve. Either way the losses show up as slow boost recovery between gearchanges rather than as an obvious lack of power, so the complaint is often "it feels lazy" rather than "it has no boost".
