Faulty battery pack coolant control valve
The valve that routes coolant around the battery pack has failed, electrically or mechanically.
A stuck valve does not stop cooling — it redirects it, and that is what makes this cause hard to recognise. The pump still runs, coolant still circulates, and nothing about the car sounds wrong. One system is being looked after and another is not.
So the complaint almost never mentions cooling. What arrives is a pack derating on a warm day, a cabin heater that has stopped producing heat, or charging that has become slower with no explanation offered. Which of those you get depends on where the valve stuck, and that is the first thing worth establishing.
Cold weather deserves its own note because it reverses the expectation. A battery performs badly cold and the car warms it deliberately; a valve stuck open can carry that heat away as fast as it is made, leaving a pack that never reaches working temperature. Reduced power, weak regenerative braking and rapid charging refused — in winter, on a car whose cooling system is technically working perfectly.
Mechanically these fail by sticking rather than breaking: deposits in the coolant, a hardened seal, or corrosion where a plastic housing meets a metal shaft. A valve that has sat in one position for months is the one that sticks, which is why the fault often appears at the first change of season rather than during it.
Coolant condition is worth checking with it. Old coolant leaves the deposits that seize these valves, and a replacement fitted into the same fluid has the same future.
