Faulty electric air conditioning compressor
The high-voltage compressor that drives the air conditioning — and, on many vehicles, cools the traction battery — has failed electrically or mechanically.
It is not the belt-driven compressor with a different label. This one contains a three-phase motor and its own inverter, running at several hundred volts, which is why its failures include shorted windings, unbalanced phase currents and driver-stage over-temperature alongside the ordinary mechanical ones.
Two failures deserve separating before anything is quoted, because only one of them is really the compressor. A compressor is lubricated by oil circulating in the refrigerant, so a system that has lost its charge starves and eventually seizes it — the compressor is then a victim, and fitting a new one without finding the leak destroys that one too. Liquid refrigerant reaching a compressor does the same thing faster, since a machine built to pump gas stalls against something that will not compress.
The genuinely internal failures are the electrical ones: a shorted turn, an insulation breakdown, or a failed leg of its inverter, each showing as one phase current disagreeing with the other two.
Ask how the refrigerant will be recovered and what oil will be used. These systems require dedicated equipment and non-conductive polyolester oil, and contamination with ordinary PAG oil is a repeat workshop error that ruins the replacement and can make the pipework live.
