Incorrect transmission fluid specification

Fluid of the wrong specification in an automatic transmission, which matters more than in almost any other part of the vehicle because the fluid is a designed component of the clutches, not a lubricant poured in around them. Its friction characteristics are engineered to give a specific rate of engagement, and the module's shift calibration assumes them.

So the wrong fluid produces shift quality faults with no mechanical damage — at first. Clutches engage too abruptly or too slowly, the module's adaptive learning drifts trying to compensate, and eventually a ratio or shift performance code appears. A transmission that began shifting badly shortly after a service is this cause until ruled out.

"Universal" and "suitable for" fluids are the usual route in. Modern transmissions specify a named fluid, and two products meeting the same broad category can behave differently in the same gearbox. Establish what was actually put in and when, and be aware the damage becomes real if it continues: prolonged slipping from wrong friction characteristics overheats the fluid and glazes the plates, at which point correcting the fluid no longer corrects the transmission.
