P0701: Transmission Control System Range/Performance
What to do
Have the fluid level and condition checked first, and confirm the fluid that is in there is the specification the manufacturer requires — this is not a case where any automatic transmission fluid will do. Avoid heavy loads and towing until it is diagnosed.
What this code means
The transmission control system is working electrically but not producing the results the module commanded. Every circuit reports a plausible value; what fails is the comparison between what was asked for and what the transmission actually did. That distinction matters, because it moves the suspect list away from wiring and towards hydraulics — pressure, fluid, and the clutches the pressure is meant to apply.
Fluid is the first question, as it is on almost every transmission code. Level, condition and specification, in that order. Automatic transmission fluids are not interchangeable: a fluid that meets the wrong specification can have friction properties different enough to produce shift complaints indistinguishable from a failing solenoid, and topping up with the wrong type is a common and entirely invisible cause. Fluid that is dark, smells burnt or is below its mark explains a large share of range/performance faults on its own.
