P0895: Shift Time Too Short
What to do
Expect changes that land with a bang. Ask whether the recorded shift times were looked at — they are an actual measurement of how the transmission is behaving, and one of the few available without taking anything apart.
What this code means
A gear change completed faster than the module expected. Transmissions time their shifts — the interval between commanding a change and seeing the ratio settle — and a shift that completes too quickly means a clutch applied more abruptly than intended.
Excessive line pressure is the usual reason, so this code frequently accompanies a pressure control fault rather than standing alone. The result is a harsh, banging change: unpleasant, hard on the driveline, and not directly damaging to the clutches, which are being clamped harder rather than allowed to slip.
Worth knowing that shift timing is recorded as a number. That makes it one of the few objective measures of transmission health available without dismantling anything, and it is worth asking to see.
