Worn ignition switch contacts
The electrical part of the switch rather than the lock. Contacts wear separately, so the failure is partial — a dashboard that lights fully on a car that will not run is normal for this, and the run contact is often dropped during cranking, which makes the engine fire and die as the key springs back.
