P2530: Ignition Switch Run Position Circuit
What to do
Expect intermittent stalling or a no-start that comes and goes. The ignition switch is worth suspecting here even though the car obviously has power — the switch feeds several circuits through separate contacts, and they do not fail together, so a fully lit dashboard on a car that will not run is a normal picture for this fault. Notice whether jiggling the key makes any difference, and whether you carry a heavy bunch of keys; weight hanging from the barrel wears the switch, and a fault that responds to moving the key points straight at it. That is a much cheaper repair than the fuel pump or sensors that usually get replaced first.
What this code means
A fault in the circuit telling the engine module that the ignition is in the run position.
This is a code worth knowing about because the part it names is rarely suspected and frequently guilty. An ignition switch is a set of mechanical contacts carrying real current, operated several times a day for the life of the vehicle. Contacts wear, pit and lose tension exactly as any switch does.
What makes it deceptive is the way it fails. The switch feeds several circuits through separate contacts, and they do not fail together. So a car can have:
- A fully lit dashboard, working radio and working lights, and still not run, because the contact feeding the engine module is the one that has failed.
- Intermittent stalling with no pattern any sensor explains.
- A no-start that comes and goes, which is very often attributed to a fuel pump, a crank sensor or an immobiliser.
Because the car obviously "has power", the switch is assumed to be fine. That assumption is what makes this fault expensive: fuel pumps and sensors get replaced first, and they are considerably dearer than a switch.
A useful thing for a driver to notice: whether the fault changes if the key is jiggled, or if weight is hanging from the keyring. A heavy bunch of keys pulls on the barrel and accelerates exactly this wear, and a fault that responds to moving the key is close to conclusive.
On push-button vehicles there is no physical switch, and the run state is determined by a module and broadcast over the data bus. The code persists but the cause changes entirely — a module, a bus fault or a configuration problem rather than worn contacts — so establishing which kind of vehicle it is comes before any diagnosis.
