P009E: Fuel Pressure Relief Control Performance/Stuck Off

What to do

Ask whether the fuel system has been checked for debris, not just this valve. These valves work to very fine clearances, and particles from a worn pump or dirty fuel jam them — so a replacement fitted into a contaminated system fails the same way.

Mention if the car has stood unused for a long period. Fuel varnish forms and sticks these valves, and that is worth knowing before parts are ordered.

Say whether the engine stumbles or hesitates when you lift off the accelerator and get back on it. That fits this fault and helps confirm it.

Mention when the fuel filter was last changed, since a filter doing its job is what keeps debris away from this valve.

What this code means

The fuel pressure relief control is not relieving rail pressure when commanded.

A high pressure fuel rail needs a way to let pressure down, not only up, and this valve is it. The pump can raise pressure quickly; without a controlled bleed, pressure falls only as the injectors consume fuel — which is far too slow when the driver lifts off and the demand collapses.

So the module commands a relief path. On some systems it is a dedicated valve returning fuel to the tank; on others it is the pump's own volume control run in reverse.

Stuck off means that path is not opening, and the consequences follow from pressure staying high when it should not:

  • Rail pressure overshoots on throttle lift-off, which the module sees as a control error and may set pressure codes alongside.
  • Injectors deliver more than commanded for a given opening time, so the mixture goes rich in transient conditions — a stumble on lift-off and recovery.
  • The mechanical relief valve becomes the only protection, and relying on it repeatedly is not what it is for.

Check for debris before assuming the valve has failed. These valves have very small clearances, and particles from a worn pump or a contaminated tank hold them off their seat or jam them shut. A valve replaced without cleaning the system meets the same debris.

Fuel varnish from long standing does the same thing and is worth asking about on a vehicle that has been laid up.
