Ask for the cooling system to be checked as well as the injector. This cylinder is in the hottest part of the engine, and a blocked coolant passage or a weak water pump can make it run hot enough to ignite the fuel early — while the temperature gauge still reads normal, because it measures somewhere else.

Mention any history of overheating, coolant loss, or a head gasket repair.

Say whether the engine knocks or sounds harsh under load, which fits this fault.

Do not leave it. Early combustion puts load on the piston and bearings at the wrong moment, and on a cylinder that may also be running hot that is a combination worth resolving promptly.

What this code means

Combustion on cylinder 3 is happening earlier than the module commanded.

The cause list is the over-advanced family's — a leaking injector, an inaccurate pilot injection, over-volatile fuel, or hot spots in the chamber — but the middle-cylinder position adds weight to the last of those.

Carbon deposits and hot spots matter more here because this is the hottest cylinder in an inline block. A glowing carbon flake or an overheated deposit can ignite the charge before the injection strategy intended, and it does so on the cylinder that runs hottest first.

Which connects this code to cooling in a way its siblings are not. A partially blocked coolant passage, a failing water pump, or an airlock all raise local temperature around the middle cylinders specifically — and the engine's overall temperature gauge may look entirely normal while one cylinder runs hot.

So check that the engine is cooling evenly before concluding the injector is at fault, especially where an over-advanced code appears on a middle cylinder with no injector history. The gauge reads one place; the problem is somewhere else.
