Symptom
The coolant temperature gauge is above its normal position or in the red. Treat as genuine overheating until proven otherwise, and do not open a pressurised coolant cap on a hot engine.

Treat this as genuine overheating until proven otherwise, and do not open a pressurised coolant cap on a hot engine. The system is pressurised precisely to raise the boiling point, so releasing that pressure hot flashes the coolant to steam.
Stop before diagnosing. An overheating engine damages itself quickly and expensively, and a warped head or a failed gasket is a different order of repair from the hose or thermostat that caused it. The distance to home is not a factor.
Once cool, the question is whether the system cannot circulate the heat or cannot reject it. Circulation failures are a thermostat stuck closed, a failed water pump or its belt, and an air lock, which is the commonest of the three and follows any work where coolant was drained. Rejection failures are a blocked radiator core, cooling fans that are not running, and a coolant level low enough that there is not enough of it to carry heat.
Two free observations narrow it a long way. With the engine hot, does the top hose get hot? A cold top hose with a hot engine is a thermostat that has not opened. And do the fans run when they should? A fan that never starts turns a normal traffic queue into an overheat while motorway driving stays fine — which is itself a diagnostic pattern.
A gauge that reads high with everything cool is the other case entirely — a temperature sensor or its wiring — and it is worth checking before the cooling system is condemned, because the two are indistinguishable from the driver's seat and only one requires stopping.
