P0561: System Voltage Unstable
What to do
Have the battery terminals, earth straps and drive belt checked. If you have noticed the headlights or dashboard lights pulsing or flickering, say so — that is the characteristic symptom and it narrows the search considerably.
What this code means
The supply voltage is fluctuating beyond what the module tolerates. Instability is diagnostically distinct from simply high or low: it points at a connection that is making and breaking, or at a regulator that is hunting, rather than at a battery that is merely tired.
A loose battery clamp, a corroded earth strap between engine and body, or a failing alternator regulator produce it. So does a slipping drive belt, which lets alternator output rise and fall with engine load — and that one is audible as a squeal on a cold morning or under load.
Visible flickering of the headlights or dashboard illumination while the engine runs is the strongest single clue, and is worth asking about directly.
