Battery warning light illuminated
The red battery symbol is lit while the engine runs. It does not mean the battery is flat — it means the charging system has stopped charging it, so the vehicle is running on stored energy alone and will stop when that is exhausted, typically within twenty to forty minutes. Switching off headlights, heated screens and air conditioning extends that considerably. Treat it as a countdown rather than an advisory.

This lamp does not mean the battery is flat. It means nothing is charging it, so the car is running on stored energy and will stop when that is gone — typically within twenty to forty minutes, and considerably longer if headlights, heated screens and air conditioning are switched off. Treat it as a countdown rather than an advisory, and drive somewhere useful immediately rather than completing the journey.
The mechanism is a comparison, not a measurement. The lamp is driven by the difference between system voltage and what the regulator expects, so it lights for a failed alternator, a broken or slipping belt, a blown main fuse or fusible link in the charging cable, and for a regulator that has stopped controlling — the last of which can also overcharge, which is the failure that boils a battery rather than flattening it.
The belt is the first thing to check because it is free and because it takes other things with it. On most cars one belt drives the alternator, the water pump and the power steering pump, so a broken belt is a charging warning and an engine that will overheat within minutes.
