P062A: Fuel Pump A Control Circuit Range/Performance

What to do

Do not ignore this one even if the car currently drives fine. It says the fuel pump is not responding properly to what it is being asked to do, and that commonly develops into a car that will not start or cuts out — often at the least convenient moment.

Try to keep more than a quarter of a tank in the meantime. Fuel around the pump helps cool it, and a struggling pump run in a nearly empty tank gets hotter and fails sooner.

Ask for a voltage drop test on the pump wiring rather than just a continuity check. A corroded connection can pass a continuity test and still starve the pump when it actually draws current — and that is a much cheaper repair than a pump.

Mention any cutting out, hesitation when hot, or hard starting, which all fit this fault.

What this code means

The fuel pump control circuit is responding, but not the way the module commanded.

Range/performance separates this from the open and short codes nearby, and the distinction is genuinely useful. The circuit is not broken — the module commanded a pump speed, monitored what came back, and found the response wrong. Something is between command and result.

Modern fuel pumps are speed-controlled rather than switched. A pump module receives a request and delivers a variable drive, so pressure is regulated by how fast the pump spins instead of by returning excess fuel to the tank. That control loop is what this code says is misbehaving.

Three explanations, in order of likelihood.

  • Resistance in the circuit. A corroded terminal or a strained connector drops enough voltage under load that the pump never reaches commanded speed. A continuity test passes; a voltage drop test under load does not.
  • A pump that is drawing more current than it should because its brushes or bearings are worn, so it lags the command.
  • A failing pump control module, whose output stage no longer delivers a clean drive.

The consequence to explain is that this often precedes a stranding. A pump struggling to meet commanded speed today is a pump that will not meet it at all on a hot day with a low tank.
