P025A: Fuel Pump Module A Control Circuit/Open
Do not keep driving
Expect the car not to start, or to cut out and not restart. This is the command line to the fuel pump's controller, and with it broken the pump generally does not run at all.
Do not let anyone drop the fuel tank to replace the pump on the strength of this code alone. It points at the wiring or the pump's control module rather than at the pump, and the pump is usually the most expensive and most labour-intensive part of that list.
Mention any recent accident repair, rear-end damage, or work involving the rear seats or boot floor. The harness this code concerns runs the length of the car, and disturbed wiring is a common cause.
Mention any sign of rodents — chewed wiring under a vehicle that stands for long periods is a genuine and frequent cause.
What this code means
The circuit between the engine module and the fuel pump control module is open.
This is not the fuel pump's own power circuit — it is the command line to the module that drives it, and on a modern vehicle those are two different things. The pump is no longer a simple relay-fed motor. A separate fuel pump control module receives a request from the engine module and delivers a variable drive to the pump, so that pressure is regulated by pump speed rather than by dumping excess fuel back to the tank.
So an open on this circuit means the request never arrives. The pump module has no instruction, and the usual consequence is that the pump does not run at all — an engine that cranks normally and does not fire.
Three places to look, in order of likelihood.
- The connector at the pump control module, which on many vehicles sits under the rear seat or in a wheel arch where water reaches it.
- The harness between the two modules, which runs the length of the car and is a common casualty of accident repair, rust, and rodent damage.
- The pump control module itself, which fails internally often enough to be a real candidate.
Do not condemn the fuel pump for this code. The pump may be perfectly good and simply never told to run.
