P0AFD: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Temperature Too Low

What to do

On a frozen morning this is normal chemistry — drive gently and it clears as the pack warms. In mild weather, or persisting when warm, it is a sensor problem wearing winter's costume and worth a scan.

What this code means

The battery is too cold to work as commanded — and unlike nearly everything else in this block, the commonest cause is the weather.

Cold is a real chemical limit, not a fault. A cold pack's reactions slow: it cannot deliver full current, and it must not accept full charge — forcing charge into cold cells does permanent damage, which is why the module restricts both until the pack warms. The felt version on a hard-frozen morning: feeble electric assistance, no electric-only running, regenerative braking declining, the engine running more — a hybrid acting like an ordinary car until the battery warms through. That is protection, and it clears itself.

The code earns investigation when the story does not fit: stored in mild weather, or persisting after a long warm drive — then a temperature sensor lying cold (the families at P0A9B–P0AE8) is the suspect, quietly restricting a healthy pack.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
