Check the battery air intake near the rear seat first: nothing stacked against it, and no felt of dust on the grille. Then ask for the battery cooling fan to be inspected and cleaned — it is a modest job that genuinely extends pack life. Heat is what ages these batteries, so a recurring over-temperature is worth treating as urgent even though the car still drives.

What this code means

The traction battery got too hot — and on the air-cooled packs most hybrids carry, the cause is very often something a vacuum cleaner fixes.

The pack breathes cabin air. A fan draws air through an intake grille — beside or under a rear seat on most designs — pushes it through the pack, and exhausts it. That intake sits at floor level in a passenger compartment, where it inhales dust, carpet fibre and pet hair for years, and the mesh behind it clogs. A pack that runs hot in ordinary driving has a starved fan until someone has actually looked; cleaning the fan and intake is the cheapest repair in the entire hybrid range, and skipping it is how heat quietly writes off packs.

The other honest causes: the fan itself failing (its own code family sits at P0A81–P0A85), luggage or a child seat blocking the grille, brutal ambient heat with sustained charging, and a pack whose ageing cells now generate more heat for the same work — deterioration and temperature feed each other, which is why this code and P0A7F keep each other's company.

The module protects the pack by limiting charge and discharge, so the symptom is hybrid behaviour going conservative — less electric running, earlier engine starts — before anything dramatic.
